Type 4 textured hair: the professional routine that changes everything
Hydration, LOC/LCO and nighttime protection for types 4A, 4B and 4C
Type 4 textured hair is naturally dry because sebum does not circulate well through the tight spirals. Key routine: (1) LOC/LCO method to seal in moisture, (2) alternating protein and hydrating masks every 2 weeks, (3) satin/silk nighttime protection, (4) avoid sulfates, heat, and insoluble silicones.

Understanding Type 4 Hair
Type 4 textured hair (4A to 4C) is the most fragile in the Andre Walker classification. Its tight spiral structure hinders sebum distribution along the hair shaft, leading to structural dryness. It breaks more easily and requires a routine centered on hydration and moisture retention.
The LOC / LCO Method
The LOC (Liquid, Oil, Cream) or LCO (Liquid, Cream, Oil) method consists of layering three products to seal in moisture:
- L — a water-based hydrating spray
- O — a vegetable oil (jojoba, castor, broccoli)
- C — a nourishing styling cream
LOC for low porosity hair, LCO for high porosity.
Weekly Deep Treatments
A protein mask every two weeks strengthens the hair shaft. Alternately, a hydrating mask with shea butter or avocado maintains flexibility. Pre-shampoo with coconut oil reduces breakage during washing.
Nighttime Protection
Sleeping on a satin or silk pillowcase, or wearing a satin bonnet, drastically reduces friction and dehydration. The pineapple technique (piling hair on top of the head) preserves curl definition.
Mistakes to Avoid
Harsh sulfates, insoluble silicones, dry brushing, excessive heat: these factors accelerate breakage. Favor low-poo shampoos or co-washing and detangling with conditioner, fingers, then a wide-tooth comb.
